We developed rituals, ceremonies to initiate our beloved into the netherworlds of sleep. For what is sleep but a rehearsal for death?  Most common among these was the construction of sleep boxes, glass caskets into which the sleepers were reposed in all their finery.  Pin-striped suits and filigreed dresses.  Around them were placed the most cherished foods and possessions from the waking life.  There will never again be anywhere as beautiful and hopeless as a dream cemetery.
